Welcome to Practical Manifestations' Blog

Welcome to Practical Manifestation's Blog, the first personal blog dedicated to global human advancement and not affiliated with any political party or specific religion.

Around the world we are presently seeing a decline in all life support systems & the depletion of nonrenewable resources. In addition, wars, famine, and natural disaster mismanagement are all commonplace. Most would agree that these are unsustainable conditions for long-term prosperity of the human race, but few can agree on what the proper course of action is to rectify the situation.I, as the author of this blog, do not claim to know the answer, but I truly believe the answer can be found through education and communication. With enough educated people putting their heads together, surely we will figure out a way to reduce and even prevent mass starvation, global warfare, and so on. Thus the purpose of our blog, tweets, and upcoming book is multifold:
  1. to expose the present injustices around the world
  2. to empower individuals to feel they are capable of creating positive change with the discussion of various techniques for personal development
  3. to inform people that they can spend money and use social media in ways that promote their values.
The overall objective is to inform the public that their daily spending and interaction on social media directly contribute to the present conditions of our world. The exploitation of people in underdeveloped countries and of environmental resources is only the fault of big business and politicians, it is something we each contribute to. When we buy the best quality product at the lowest price, it encourages big businesses to put money before values. In turn, businesses contribute to political fundraisers and lobby politicians to put money before values in the rules that govern big business because essentially that is what the population is saying it wants. $7 Billion was spent on the 2012 US election.

This is probably the reason that politicians promise one thing to get into office and do something completely differently once they are there. It is simply indicative of the discrepancy between what the public claims to want and what the public is actually willing to paying for. Capitalism, by design, gives people whatever they are willing to pay for. Right now we get great products at low prices at the expense of people in underdeveloped countries and our natural resources. By educating people so that more are comfortably surviving, they will be able to put their values ahead of money and will be able to afford the slightly more expensive product that is made by the business owned by people that share the values of the customer. Education consists of methods of personal development as well as methods to create positive changes in the world.

Topics covered here and in our upcoming book, Bulding A Better Human, are Science, Spirituality & Philosophy, Health, Ancient History, Resource Management, Politics, Business, and our Vision of the Future from a politically unaffiliated perspective. Fundamentals Part 2: Money

This post is part 1 of a 9-part series on the Fundamentals of the Practical Manifestations' project. It introduces the principles of our project and gives a preview for the material covered in our upcoming book Building A Better Human. Note: The full list of all parts of the 9-part series is provided in the "Table of Contents" section at the end of each post in the series.

Fundamentals: Money

We are all familiar with the phrase "money is evil," and in many instances this assertion appears to be pretty accurate. Of course money in and of itself is not evil. It is just a tool to make the exchange of physical goods and services convenient. To rid oneself of money is to lose tool of convenience. One then needs to either learn to be self-sustaining or establish some other mode of exchange of goods and services. Few things have exactly equal value and the value of any good or service is debatable. As they say, "One mans trash is another man's treasure."

As convenient as money is, there is no denying that people's desire to accumulate wealth leads to the majority of the disputes around the globe. The devastation of conflicting desires to accumulate wealth is largely hidden from the American population, but we are one of the biggest contributors to it. By purchasing the best quality and lowest costing goods and services from corporations, it encourages those corporations to exploit natural resources and people in underdeveloped countries to meet that demand. In turn, Americans are made to feel like we NEED all these goods and services, even though hundreds of generations prior survived just fine without the latest I-Phone or what have you. We buy ourselves into debt and if you subtract from our wages how much money we spend paying back our debts (including taxes, which mostly consist of national, state, and city debt fees), most of us are left with barely enough money to survive. So there we have it--a whole world population fighting for survival. And when people are fighting for survival, they are not thinking about how they can best serve the world.

Fundamentals Part 1: Desperation

This post is part 1 of a 9-part series on the Fundamentals of the Practical Manifestations' project. It introduces the principles of our project and gives a preview for the material covered in our upcoming book Building A Better Human. Note: The full list of all parts of the 9-part series is provided in the "Table of Contents" section at the end of each post in the series.

Desperation

#pmdesperation (blog label/search term)

You do not have to look hard to find desperation in America. The American Chemical Society tells us Americans took 4.02 billion prescriptions in 2011 and spent a record $320 billion. That is enough for every man, woman, and child in the US to take about 13 prescriptions each. Of all the money the entire world spends on prescription medications, the US spends about half of it, yet we cannot boast of our longevity either, so apparently we are in a lot of pain. But the desperation does not stop there. Just in the last few months people have "lost it" and attacked children and teachers in a school, attacked people at a movie theater, and set off bombs at the Boston Marathon.

Our government tells us that the cure is to limit the types of guns people can purchase--too many automatic weapons on the streets. This blog is not about advancing political agendas, so maybe limits on guns would help. Then we hear a little about better treatment for the mentally ill, because supposedly only the mentally ill are attacking others. But when did mental illness become a cause for violence? Having autism does not mean a person will be violent. Autistic people in non-violent communities are not violent, yet they have access to guns and have a mental condition, so maybe it is a sign that something else in society is triggering this madness. Combined with the fact that so many people are taking medications just to get by, perhaps the madness is not confined to the mentally ill and to those that do not know how to properly handle weapons--the sickness seems to be everywhere in America, but why?

Fundamentals Part 8: Action

The key to the success any project is to clearly explain how others can participate. Typically, when individuals think of trying to change the world, they think of activist groups marching in the streets somewhere and sometimes resorting to violence to get their point across to their oppressors.

Our cause is different. In the movement to promote a values-based human civilization, there is no oppressor to fight against except the one within. Each individual's decision to submit to the power of money is completely voluntary. There is no system holding us down, the resistance we feel is only the inertia of the status quo (which we all contribute to). We can try to blame politicians, big business, freeloaders, and so on for the current conditions in the world, but ultimately we can only blame ourselves for contributing to it with every dollar we spend. Whether or not they acknowledge it, each dollar a person spends promotes a cause. A dollar spent at one business will be used to exploit people in an underdeveloped country while a dollar spent at another will be used to save the environment. Each dollar you spend has power to create change. Some people think money is the problem and maybe one day money will be gone. But money is here for now and we each need to recognize the power we have when we engage in the economy: each dollar we spend contributes to one cause or another.

The problem is that too many people feel powerless and in a fight for survival they put money ahead of their real values. Our upcoming book explains where that feeling of being powerless originated from, but for now we can only say that the perception of you being powerless to create change internally and thus externally is only an illusion. We feed into the fear by not acknowledging the power we inherently have. Each day members of general public become more and more desperate. Unemployment is high, acts of terrorism are consistently in the news, and more people than ever are taking prescription drugs and illegal drugs to deal with the pain.

The volatility can also be seen in the economy. Economic systems around the world are showing signs of weakness (the US alone has $16 Trillion in debt, an increase of about 300% since just a few years ago), and continued use of nonrenewable resources is not a sustainable condition. All of the above tells us that significant changes may be on the horizon. Our job then is to prepare the present generations and the generations of the future for these changes to ensure a somewhat smooth transition. If our civilization is to survive, we will need a better way of managing our natural resources. With money as the most important factor in all business decisions, our natural resources are quickly depleting, so we may see the end of money as being superior to all values or the end of money altogether. Prospects for the future are described in the post, Vision of the Future.

Anyone interested in participating is able to do so in a variety of ways. Basically anytime a person puts his or her own values above the pursuit of money, that person is encouraging the rest of society to do the same. As members of Western culture though, we prefer to be able to physically see the impact each individual has. Luckily to that end we have the internet, specifically social media, at our disposal. The way it works is that a person shares information about human advancement with his or her friends, with us (@practicalmanife) and our followers, and with the general public. Today many web and blog sites make sharing information easy by offering "share" buttons including ones for Twitter and FaceBook. We offer more detailed information on what to share and how to share it below.

In Times of Social Unrest

It can be extremely difficult to keep focused when there seems to be chaos all around us. Corruption, confusion, and warfare run rampant in our businesses, government and in ourselves. The media does not let us forget just how much unrest there is, not for a moment. We constantly hear about corrupt politicians and business managers as well as the wars around the world we are involved in.

So how do we keep level-headed amidst all this chaos? The calmness must come from within. The surety that whatever happens to us and the rest of the world, we are going to be okay. Is it worth fighting for what we believe in, changing laws, and getting people in businesses and government that have an interest in improving things rather than just filling their pockets? Absolutely. But the way that we are most effective is by being of sound mind, body, and spirit. Although the chaos we see around us needs to be addressed immediately and fervently, we are powerless without having first attained an internal balance. Only with a balance in our mind, body, and spirit can we start to correct the injustice and mayhem around us. For it is with this balance that we can be sure we are thinking clearly and swiftly. We know we have the ability to recognize the path to the quickest and most successful solution to every problem we encounter.

G. Lola Hosts Live Stream Event of Dispenza’s Workshop Jan 19, 2013

Yesterday Gertrud Lola of the Metro West Healing Center of Natick, MA held her first ever free live stream event for one of Dr. Joe Dispenza’s workshops. The event was held in Wellesley, Massachusetts, USA and streaming Dispenza’s workshop being held in Vancouver, Canada. It started at 12pm and ran into the evening, running parallel to the Vancouver event that started at 9am due to the time zone difference.

I have to say, it was quite an experience. Having read Breaking the Habit of Being Yourself and listened to his recorded workshop before, I was already familiar with Dispenza’s work. Nonetheless he presented the information in new and interesting ways, and he paused often to let the members of the audience discuss the concepts with their neighbors. At each pause we would take turns trying to explain the concepts to our neighbor and vice versa. It kept everyone in the room engaged.

Cory Booker Interview on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart

Check out this recent interview with Cory Booker, mayor of Newark, New Jersey. He rescues people from burning buildings and last week he lived strictly off the food-stamps diet to get a better understanding of what poor people in his area are going through. It gets particularly interesting beginning at 4:37 reflecting his very different worldview where every individual is capable of greatness and where society is affected when one person suffers.

The Victimization of America

The Newtonian/mechanistic paradigm may be over 300 years old, but its influence continues to be quite strong both in America and throughout Western culture. According to the paradigm the workings of the universe were understood to be like a giant clock, and man’s activities had little overall impact. The worldview was reinforced with scientific laws and, in some cases, proved to be more accurate than the views of the Catholic Church—namely that the Earth revolved around the sun (and not the other way around).
Today we see the lasting effect of the paradigm in that sometimes we feel like we  are the victims of just being in the wrong place at the wrong time, and there is nothing we can do about it. If we accident prone or are dissatisfied with our job, we sometimes figure: Maybe that is the way it was meant to be.
But maybe we can actually do something to change our lives when we are unhappy. Scientists realized the worldview put forth by Newton, Bacon, and Descartes was not completely accurate. It held to be true at the macroscopic level, with some exceptions, but at the microscopic level the universe is far more complex and mysterious. Evidence is mounting that a person changes the universe in some ways just by being present at any given moment. The observer is no longer disconnected from the objects observed.

Book Review of Self-Hypnosis and Subliminal Technology by Eldon Taylor

Below is our review of the book Self-Hypnosis And Subliminal Technology: A How-to Guide for Personal-Empowerment Tools You Can Use Anywhere! by Eldon Taylor

I liked the general approach of this book: teaching the reader to develop his/her own self-hypnosis programs. There are many books out there on hypnosis and self-hypnosis, but few list the simple steps involved in creating your own program. I have found self-hypnosis in general to be extremely effective both for relaxing and for healing, so when I heard that a book had recently been published teaching people to optimize their self-hypnosis programs, I was quite interested.

The second half of the book discusses subliminal technology and the development of subliminal message programs for personal use. What I found fascinating was how many people doubt the effect of subliminal messages, yet the author witnessed an incredible amount of resistance from representatives of various businesses when his local government officials attempted to pass legislation requiring notification of subliminal material prior to subjecting the public to it.

This book is a great read for anyone interested in self-hypnosis. Like many books these days, it is written in a conversational tone. I briefly listened to the accompanying CD and the recordings were professionally done.

I always try to find something I dislike about a book when my overall review is positive, and I suppose for this title I would have liked to have seen the author go into more depth on self-hypnosis and perhaps save the subliminal technology chapters for a different book. I think more examples of self-hypnosis programs and techniques would have been helpful for readers to perfect the skill of creating their own programs. Like anything else people create, self-hypnosis programs are an art, and I think the author could provide keen insight on some of the intricacies.

Overall, I would definitely recommend people read this book if they have any interest in learning to create or improve their own self-hypnosis programs or if they would like to delve into creating positive subliminal material for themselves.

Book Review of the Fourth Fisherman by Joe Kissack

I recently read the book The Fourth Fisherman: How Three Mexican Fishermen Who Came Back from the Dead Changed My Life and Saved My Marriage, published March 13, 2012 by Joe Kissack.  Below is my review posted on Amazon.com

BEGINNING OF REVIEW
This is a fascinating story of one man finally surrendering his life to God paralleled with a group of Mexican fishermen lost at sea with no recourse but to trust that God would see them through their struggle. While the author struggles to find purpose in his life (recovering from a childhood full of physical abuse), several men lost somewhere off the coast of Mexico struggle to hold on for dear life, clenching tightly to one of their last few possessions, the Bible.

I felt the author really captures the story of each individual on the boat, even though he was only able to gather the information after the fact. The book is well-written and gives insight into how people come to acknowledge the existence of God in drastically different ways. Furthermore it sheds light on the fact that miracles happen every day and sometimes stories about miracles make the news...but sometimes they are too unbelievable to report.

That said, this book does have a bit of a "finding Jesus" feel to it because that is just what happened to many of the individuals involved. While the fishermen experienced an undeniable miracle first hand with little recourse but to have faith in God, the author attempts to parallel his personal transformation story with that of the fishermen, which somewhat reminded me of a 700 Club episode. Since the author's personal transformation story is what it is, I cannot fault him for describing it as a sudden dramatic event, if that is what he experienced. Miracles do happen to people every day and if God suddenly flipped a switch and he awoke to the Light, more power to him. I would recommend reading this book if you are looking for a true story of this nature, which this appears to be.

I look forward to reading more from this author as his path hopefully brings him that much closer to God.

FTC Disclosure: I received this book for free from WaterBrook Multnomah Publishing Group for this review.

My Book Review of The End of Suffering By The Dali Lama

I appreciate the honor of reading a book written by His Holiness, the 14th Dali Lama, The End of Suffering and the Discovery of Happiness, published 5/1/2012.  This book attempts to break down into simple language some rather complex concepts such as emptiness in everything, and it does so in a clear and concise manner.  As Westerners it can be difficult to think of everything as being empty without approaching a nihilistic viewpoint, and with a nihilistic approach to life, what would be the point to acting with any moral standard or pursuing any goals aside from what immediately satisfies the physical appetite?

He explains that the emptiness found in everything is simply an understanding of everything we perceive as being dependent on something else.  This understanding of conditional existence is key to ending suffering.  It allows the subject to transcend the attachment he/she feels toward people and objects within one’s realm of perception.  By meditating on and realizing the transient nature of everything we perceive, we can decrease our anger and frustration toward the people and things that hurt us and begin to love the nature of the underlying existence—that which everything else is dependent upon.

Furthermore, the more you concern yourself with the happiness of others, the more happiness you will experience.  Whereas in some religions this is perceived as a situation where a person makes God happy and God blesses them with peaceful relationships and improved circumstances, according to the Dali Lama, one’s concern for others directly translates in that person being more happy.  It seems that in acting in this way they begin to renounce the attachment of their ego’s pursuits and adopt a love for all living beings, an existence harmonized with the underlying essence of everything.

As a person raised Roman Catholic that tries to find truth in all areas of life including science, music, and all religions, I found this book to be quite refreshing.  The Dali Lama does not concern himself with trying to degrade other religions but rather acknowledges the fact that they do contain many truths.  It is written with the utmost compassion and humility and I feel honored to have been able to write this review that simply captures my perspective.

FTC Disclosure: I received this book for free from Hay House Publishing for this review. The opinion in this review is unbiased and reflects my honest judgment of the product.

Book Review Part 2: A Spiritual Renegades Guide To The Good Life

So I finished reading Lama Marut’s book today, and I actually was able to meet the Lama in person between my last writing and this one.  Being that he was doing a book signing north of Boston and I live in central Rhode Island, just getting up there on a weekday afternoon posed a bit of a challenge.  Once I arrived at Cape Ann, though, I felt like I was in paradise.  Even the parking meter welcomed me with about 55 free minutes.

What I like about this book is its conversational style…you feel like you are sitting with the Lama, face to face.  It took a little bit of getting used to, at first, but I found it to be more engaging than other styles.

As far as context, he introduces an interesting notion of the past and future being subject to change, but the present as being fixed.  This contradicts many philosophical sayings, such as “que sera sera” (whatever will be will be) and “what’s done is done.”  The Lama substantiates his theory by stating that in the face of a difficult situation, namely dealing with an annoying person, no single tactic works every time.  Some annoying people stop being annoying when you are kind to them, some stop being annoying when you are mean to them, and others continue to be annoying no matter what you do to them.  Therefore he states that the present is the result of past karma and therefore is unchangeable.  Only our reaction to the present can be changed.  How we view the past and how we react to the present both drastically affect the future.

Toward the end of his book he tackles the paradox of feeling content in the present moment while maintaining motivation to seek spiritual development.  Western culture has sold us on continually pursuing happiness in the present moment with stuff you can buy…as if you could buy happiness.  We remain unhappy because we fail to forgive ourselves for past failures, try endlessly to change our present condition of suffering (to no avail), and forget to express gratitude for all of our blessings and treat others as we would want to be treated in the present in order to ensure a happy future.

If I was to say something critical about the book, which every good review should since no work is perfect, it would be that the author presupposes the reader either believes in karma or is ready to believe in karma when presented with some convincing arguments.  I think the author has studied Buddhism for so long that a worldview inclusive of karma is the only thing that seems to make sense to him, and the book reflects that.  Therefore his suggestions for living the good life all depend on one's conviction regarding karma.  In his version of karma, which probably matches traditional Buddhist views, karma is a cycle of a person acting kindly toward others and being subjected to pleasant circumstances in the future and similarly acting negatively toward others in the present and being subjected to unpleasant circumstances in the future, and it works 100% of the time. I think that the Christian view also makes sense of a God running the show and rewarding you when you are good and punishing you when you are bad, but both the reward and punishment are designed to guide a person toward spiritual growth.  It does make sense that it is working 100% of the time, whatever the system is, otherwise there would be a great temptation to "get away with something", which would completely undermine the spiritual growth process.  Of course there are many other views out there including ones where your good and evil acts count for nothing.  I would venture to say people following the latter logic would probably gain little from this book, but those following the Christian view and others like it may find the book to be helpful even if they are not completely sold on karma.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading the Lama’s book and look forward to reading more from this author.
